Practical examples to understand difference
Time that you have the map, let's see some examples of pairs of words that are distinguished solo by one vocal. The difference seems minimal, but it totally changes the significato.
ship /ʃɪp/ (ship) vs. sheep /ʃiːp/ (sheep)
ship: less high-pitched tongue, short sound.sheep: tongue higher and forward, long sound.
pen /pɛn/ (pen) vs. pan /pæn/ (pan)
